Laura's Declassified College Budget Survival Guide

Hey baby Jags!

It's a beautiful Sunday here in the Port City, and I'm #backatitagain with some survival tips. We were asked to write about how to survive on a college budget this week. My first instinct was "you don't." Bur I will give you a few tips that have kept me afloat during my college struggle.

1) Budget wisely. No seriously, I know this may make me sound like a middle-aged soccer mom but BUDGET YOUR MONEY. Make a plan. Write out how much money you have to spend each month. Know the things that are completely necessary (gas, groceries, etc.) and see how much money you have left for entertainment purposes. You may have to have sleep for dinner a few nights to be able to go out with your friends on Thursday. It's all about balance, people.

2) Utilize your student status. Many companies and restaurants give student discounts. Use them to your advantage. You have to struggle through college, you might as well reap the benefits while you're at it.

3) Carpool. You and your friends are probably going to the same place. I know me and my best friend always rode to physics together to save gas. Plus you get a partner for your car concerts, so it's a win win.

4) Treat yoself, but not all the time. Put some money aside to spend on yourself every month, but know that you won't be able to get everything you want. Personally, I want my nails done twice a month but living this #collegelife it happens every two months. The struggle, I know.

"Ain't Nobody Got Time For That"

Hey baby Jags! We have officially passed the midterm mark of the semester and things are getting REAL. I have honestly enjoyed this semester so much and done well in the classroom, but there are inevitable challenges we all will face as college students. The main challenge I have faced throughout my almost 3 years at South would be managing my time. I currently am taking 17 hours, working part time on campus, juggling a few different clubs and honors societies, and finding time for philanthropic work and sisterhood events with my sorority, Kappa Delta. It can be extremely difficult to find time for everything thrown at you and you definitely will go through periods of time where you feel as if you spread yourself too thin. I have learned that making a list each morning when I wake up is extremely beneficial for me. On Sunday afternoons, I will write out all that I have to do for the week. 3 Tips

Hey baby Jags! Picking the college you want to attend can be extremely stressful. It can get overwhelming to muddle through a list of schools and deciding where you want to spend the next 4+ years of your life can be very scary. Everyone approaches the college-picking process differently, but I will give you three tips that I used to help decide on a university. 1) Money. For me, I looked into scholarship requirements and figured out how much assistance I could get from each university I was interested in. Finances are a huge factor for most people when deciding on a college. I found that South was the most affordable and I was able to earn the largest amount of scholarship money here as well. 2) Location. I come from a college town so all of my friends stayed in our hometown for school. I wanted to get away but also be close enough to home to be able to get to my parents if I ever needed them.
